What’s changed in the National Construction Code in its latest update for NCC 2022?

Hello! This is Episode 286. In it, I’m going to share some details about the specific updates that have been made to the latest iteration of our National Construction Code in Australia.

If you haven’t listened to my introductory episode for this series I’m doing on the National Construction Code, I’d encourage you to head back to the previous episode, Episode 285, and listen to it first. It will give you context to this episode, and this upcoming series that will be super helpful.

In this episode, I’ll be sharing more on each of the updates made based on the parts of the National Construction Code that they impact.

I admit, this may be dry listening for some, but it’s going to be super helpful to learn more about the terminology and the kinds of things the National Construction Code has taken into consideration for these latest updates. 

It will also provide great context for the upcoming episodes where I’ll be speaking to our amazing guests on the various different topics these updates relate to.

If you’re a homeowner listening to this, I encourage you to not feel you have to become an expert in all the intricacies of the National Construction Code. 

My goal with this series, and all my content on Undercover Architect actually, is to empower and educate you with concepts, terminology, demonstrations of best practices, and insights into the questions to ask and red flags to be aware of. 

I believe this is the best way for you to choose a team, create your design, make all your decisions, and have a great construction experience, ultimately ending up with a fantastic home you love living in.

I don’t want you over-owning the responsibility or custodianship of this information. It is your team’s responsibility to navigate you through this information and the process of designing, building and achieving approvals according to it. 

I do know however, that not all industry professionals are across this information. 

So by sharing it with you in detail, I believe it will better enable you to notice that early, not fall for what they’re telling you, so you can get the right people around you instead.

If you’re an industry professional listening to this, please don’t rely on this as your ONLY education about the updates to the National Construction Code. 

There is so much education and training available, both free and paid, on resources such as:

• the Australian Building Code Boards (or ABCB) website
• both the HIA and MBA, but I think the HIA’s is better
• the Australian Institute of Architects also has training sessions
• and Design Matters is another option

… plus loads more.

And, you can also sit down and simply read through the new NCC 2022 Volume 2, and the Housing Provisions Reference Document and Livable Housing Design Standard that are all available online. 

There is really no excuse to not be upskilling yourself on this information either.

A reminder too that this largely relates to new builds, but it’s always necessary to check what your project scope and location may mean for your approvals whatever you’re doing. 

Don’t assume this doesn’t apply without doing proper due diligence.
